For lesson plan #2, the students will participate in a read-aloud of the book “Oh the Places You’ll Go”, as read by the teacher. It is during this lesson they will practice their reading comprehension and analytical and critical dissection of text styles and text characteristics.
Prior to this lesson, students have explored their own personal interest in exploration and journey. They have listed three places they want to visit and expanded on why these places are of interest to them. In this lesson, they will further explore the idea of a “journey” through the literary working of Dr. Seuss’s book, “Oh the Places You’ll Go”. Students will be prompted to identify literary characteristics (beginning, middle, ends, climax, conflict, characters, etc.) as well as text styles (word choice, voice, etc.) throughout a read-aloud. Later, they will pause and reflect on what they have read and create a prediction on what they believe will happen in the end of the text. This prediction will be used as an exit pass to assess reading comprehension. More details below!
